I remember the felonious voice of Fred Foy. I have an inordinate amount of Lone Ranger shows where you hear his narration. He's good at what he does. The green hornet, Sergeant Preston, The Hermit's cave, have I got all the Mutual shit covered? I loved hearing him read. He'd have such emotion and the way he'd describe things, just like a talking book reader if you ask me. I don't remember him hosting When Radio Was. I do remember Chuck Shaden (I know I fucked up the spelling on his name) he was a great host. I loved hearing him tell stories. To me a good dj doesn't just play the records, but gives good narration and maybe some knowledge about what he's playing there. I think he still has a show on the weekends. I think it's Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 central time on wdcb fm in Chicago. Right there you got 4 hours of old time radio. I warn you however, a lot of it involves talking. I don't mind the talking personally cuz I like hearing the stories and the remembering back shit. You might not like it however. Cuz anytime I listen with a friend they always say, "when the fuck are we gonna hear a show." So be warned. I think Stan Freeburg hosted When Radio Was as well. I like his voice too. It is cool that other networks run When Radio Was now besides wbbm Chicago from where it originates. The thing that bothered me about that show was how they'd break off half of a show for the next day. They couldn't quite squeeze in 2 features in their condensed hour. I was always disappointed because I couldn't always guaranty that I'd be there the next day should they run something that's a cliff hanger. I don't know if this was intentional but I don't see how they could have a complete hour with so many adds and news and talking. The adds were from Radio Spirits and Metral Golden Memories. That's a local store that Chuck Shaden works at. It's a great place. I've bought lots of shows from them. When you phone metral Golden memories, everytime you hold they have imitations of either Fred Allen or Red Skelton or Jack Benny or Abbott and Castello telling you to wait and someone will be with you. Another thing cool about that store is they sell pretaped programs for cheap. So people in the past have made radio tapes and those are 50 cents a piece. So if you live there and you want to make some money off your spare tapes, look them up and mention that you heard about them threw the program. Also for your information, wbbm has a great signal threw the east coast and the mid west. Anywhere I've traveled I've always heard their strong signal. Back in Saxonburg there'd be lots of QSB while I listened. QSB is fade in and fade out. Clearly we needed skywaves to hear WBBM for it was not possible in the day time hours. How does it come in where you live? If you're outside the U.S. and you hear it, pat yourself on the back. You've got some good am dx your way rascal.

Metro Golden Memories has closed down to the best of my knowledge. It's not worth it to stay up until 1 A.M. waiting for "When Radio Was" on WBBM. There is a 24-hour stream online and, believe me, it's got some great time fillers when programs are not running. Point your media player to live.wnar-am.com:8500/listen.pls. They've got great big-band and standards music, classic jingles presumably from the old WNAR, and I've even heard them splicing in commercials extolling the benefits of listening to the radio. As they say, radio truly stretches the imagination. TV stretches it up to 27 inches, but radio goes even further. Great tip on the podcast by the way.
